The Broadcast Journalism Major, B.A. prepares students for reporting, producing, and delivering news and news programs via radio, television and video. Instruction focuses on the methods and techniques for reporting the news, including the principles of broadcast technology, broadcast reporting, on- and off-camera and microphone procedures, editing, media law, and professional standards and ethics.
A good broadcast journalist makes their job look easy, but every anchor and field reporter will tell you that their job was very difficult to obtain. Through our curriculum, internships and hands-on experience, we’ll mold you into the best broadcast journalism professional required by the industry’s standards. The Department of Journalism and Media Production offers its students prolific internship opportunities. Journalism and Media Production majors are highly skilled and have gained real-world experience at several media outlets, nonprofit organizations and businesses throughout Colorado; including: Fox 31 News, Rocky Mountain PBS, High Noon Entertainment, Denver Post TV, Altitude Sports and Entertainment, Mainstream Films, LLC and Univision.

Take me to the CLAS Student Success RoadmapWith a degree in Broadcast Journalism from MSU Denver, you’ll have the required skills to enter the job market as soon as you’ve graduated. The average entry-level salary for broadcasters is $46,500.
John Hammond spent much of his professional life in broadcast television at KMGH-TV, Denver’s ABC affiliate. He is also an experienced educational and interactive multimedia trainer. He has served as a social media consultant for the Metropolitan Denver YMCA, and has been a featured audio visual software trainer and presenter for Apple Computer’s MacWorld, the DVD Association, and the Colorado Film and Video Association. In addition, he has authored numerous commercial DVD titles for a variety of professional clients, including Garmin, Time-Warner Cable, the Colorado Film Foundation, Rocky Mountain PBS, Jeppesen, and the US Forest Service. Furthermore, Jeff is an avid road and track cyclist, and is a USA Cycling licensed official.
Alfredo Sanchez is a multiple time Emmy-winner journalist. In his more than 20 years experience in the media industry, Alfredo has produced thousands of news, sports, and entertainment content hours of high quality television. He also has years of experience as a manager. He has coached broadcasters, taught journalism in Texas and Colorado, and currently oversees the Broadcast Journalism courses at MSU Denver. In his limited spare time, Alfredo is often found running on the track, where he is a 100- and 200-meter specialist.
